Information For Nurses:
What is a nurse expert?
As a member of the nursing profession, the liability nurse expert
witness identifies standards of care for nursing aspects of the
case and objectively describes the details of whether or not standards
were breached. This role provides an opportunity for nurses to
combine professional education and knowledge with experience from
clinical, administrative, educational, and research settings and
apply them to situations in the legal arena. The liability nurse
expert witness should be prepared in the same specialty as the nurses
involved in the case, with knowledge and experience in similar clinical
scenarios.
What does a nurse expert do?
- Review medical records.
- Define applicable standards of care.
- Research literature.
- Meet with attorneys to discuss case.
- Prepare written opinion reports.
- Provide depositions and court testimony.
What attributes must a nurse expert have?
- Must possess integrity and credibility – with objectivity
and lack of bias.
- Must be reasonably available and be willing and able to devote
the necessary time to properly prepare.
- Must be articulate and able to communicate truth in an ethical,
objective, and effective way and not back off of his/her opinions.
- Should be likable and personable, and pay special attention to:
voice, likability and believability, eye contact, demeanor, dress.
- Must be able to think on their feet, react to difficult questions
and be able to roll with the punches.
Do you qualify as a nurse expert?
- You are a registered nurse with a valid professional license.
- You have a minimum of 5 years experience in your specialty
area of nursing.
- You are currently practicing in that area.
- You have never been the subject of any disciplinary actions,
or the subject of any nursing malpractice lawsuit.
How do you become a nurse expert for Corbett Consulting, LLC?

- Send a resume by fax or mail, or attach one to the contact form
available on the website
- We may arrange to meet with you at a location nearest you
- Once you are qualified as a nurse expert, you will be added to our
database
- Once you are placed in the database, you will be notified as soon
as there is a need for a nurse expert with your background and experience.
What happens once I agree to take a case?

We will meet with you at a location nearest you for a quick
inservice.
- There will be paperwork for you to review and sign.
- You will be contacted by the attorney handling the case.
- The records will be sent directly to your home.
- You will review the material and formulate an opinion as to
whether or not there were any breaches in the standard of care.
- You will contact the attorney when ready to discuss your
opinion of the case.
- You may be asked to put your opinion in writing.
- You may be asked to testify in deposition or trial to the
nursing standards or care.
